Grant Thornton: Modernist in leadership style linked to emerging markets

According to the latest Grant Thornton International Business Report 2014 (IBR), the Modernists style are evident to business leaders in emerging markets, while peers in Europe rely on more traditional practices. The modernists are more open to the use of coaching, and value certain leadership attributes as creativity and intuition.

The research reveals that, in emerging markets, 44% of business leaders in ASEAN have used a coach to develop their leadership skills. The percentage of Latin America and Asia Pacific was 43% and 41% respectively. This compares just one in four (25%) business leaders in the EU. The North America result was level with the global average of 35%. In China, 36% of business leaders have used a coach, slightly above the global average.
